Prior to establishing the patent law firm of Dr. Kawawa & Partners, for 5 years from 1988, I was a Director and Patent Counsel with the Patent Department of Nippon Kokan K.K. ("now JFE.steel"), a leading integrated steel company in Japan. The responsibility covered drafting patent specifications for Japan and foreign country, making documents for objection, expert opinions and licensing negotiation. In addition, I had been a member of Japan Patent Association for 4 years and have conducted a variety of researches on intellectual property laws including the relevant case laws in the United States and several European countries. Before joining NKK's Patent Department, I served as the Director for the Technical Research Center at NKK. As such, I directed a variety of research projects on titanium, aluminum, ceramics and semiconductors. From 1979 to 1983, I served at NKK's New York office as Technical Director and was engaged in licensing activities. My twenty-nine years of experience in the steel industry also includes two years of research activity from 1960 at Technische Hochschule in Aachen, Germany and years of directing a variety of research activities in iron-making, steel-making, casting, rolling and the material science of metals including semiconductor. I have also obtained extensive and invaluable experience by filing approximately 300 patent applications in Japan and several foreign countries for personal and technological inventions. Based on all my experience stated above, I have been now managing the patent law firm since 1993 as representative of Dr. Kawawa & Partners.
